Few months ago we found an exotic fruit in our garden in Santa Cruz la Laguna, on Lake Atitlan Guatemala. We didn’t know what kind of fruit it was. We were looking for some information and finally we thought that it was jaimito, but we were wrong, Today I was searching to find out what kind of fruit is in our garden and I found it . . . JABUTICABA.  We ate our first ripe fruit few days ago and it was so delicious. I’m sharing some information about this Exotic Fruit.

Jaboticaba, found in the forests, meadows and gardens, Jaboticaba is a leafy tree, smooth brown trunk and opposite leaves. Its white flowers give off a sweet smell and its fruits – spherical and black or reddish purple bark – enclose a watery, whitish substance sweet and pleasant taste, which involves two violet

This exotic fruit is native to South American countries like Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. The first thing that strikes you is that it’s fruit stems directly from the tree trunk. When in full season, the tree looks as though it is covered with purple warts. It is also called “grape tree” because this fruit is used in South America like the grapes used elsewhere.

The jabuticaba is a fresh juicy fruit that can be eaten fresh off the tree. It is also used in jellies, or left to ferment and become wine and hard liquor. Its dried peel is used to treat asthma and diarrhea.We have discovered several anticancer compounds in this fruit , so scientists hope to be useful in the fight against this disease.
